Michael was part of an eight-member delegation of youth from around the country representing the Boy Scouts of America as it presented it annual Report to the Nation in Washington, D.C the first week of March 2006. The report highlights the achievements of the Boy Scouts of America over the past year through programs such as Good Turn for America, a national service initiative that addrsses critical areas of need in society. Each year, the Boy Scouts of America selects a group of young men and women embodying the goals of Scouting and representing the Scout Oath adn Law to present the report to the speaker of the House of Representatives. Michael is one of only 189 Boy Scouts to be a recipient of this prestigious award. In December 2003 Michael used the fire escape plan he developed in Boy Scouts to rescue his 18-month old sister from a fire in his family's home. The fire started in a downstairs bedroom and Michael braved smoke and flames to reach his baby sister's crib in the upstairs bedrom. He escaped through the second floor window, climbed onto the roof, handed Allison (his 18 month old sister) to his older sister Tiffanie, and then jumped to safety. In addition to presenting the official report at the U.S. Capitol, the delegation toured area sites, including the White House, the U.S. Supreme Court, Arlington National Cemetery, Goddard Space Flight Center, the Pentagon, and the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.
